Clipping Toenails

Clipping is Important

It is important to clip toenails for your bird’s sake and for yours.  Unclipped nails can break.  Birds can get nails caught in toys if they are too long.

What supplies do you need?

Before you begin, be sure you have Quik Stop or cornstarch on hand (in case you clip a little too close).  You will also need nail clippers.  Sometimes you may need a file to file nails after clipping them.

How do I clip my bird’s nails?

I usually hold my bird in a towel, since no one likes nail clips.  Lighter nails are easier to clip, since you can see how far back to clip without causing any bleeding.  You need to be careful with darker nails.  Only clip a little at a time.  Your goal is to make sure your bird does not have sharp nails.
